For me the heart and soul of Portugal is in the north - fishing villages and wine estates , Porto, the Douro and The Minho. Porto, the port-wine capital and a long standing meca for wine aficionados, is at the mouth of the Douro (flowing into the Atlantic). Porto's center is a Unesco World Heritage site with beautiful blue tiled buildings, village-style plazas and reminders of its centuries old history. From here historic fishing villages and spectacular landscapes with the many wine estates are within an easy day trip.
